Strong rights

Maryland solar cancellation rights

3 business days generally — MD Commercial Law §§ 14-301–14-306 (Door-to-Door Sales Act); BUT home improvement contracts (incl. solar installs): 5 business days, and 7 business days if the buyer is at least 65 (Acts 2017, ch. 93 & 94, eff. June 1, 2017; § 14-301(d) definition); plus FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429 (3 business days, ≥$25 home sales).

The law

  • MD Commercial Law §§ 14-301–14-306 (Door-to-Door Sales Act; home-improvement carve-out, Acts 2017 ch. 93/94)
  • MD Business Regulation §§ 8-101 et seq. (MD Home Improvement Commission licensing)
  • MD Commercial Law §§ 13-101 et seq. (Consumer Protection Act)

Protections for buyers 65+

Enhanced: home improvement contract buyers age 65+ get 7 business days to cancel (vs. 5 for others), MD Commercial Law § 14-301(d)(2)(iii), Acts 2017 ch. 93/94. The MD search result text confirms: 'for a home improvement contract, 5 business days or 7 business days if the buyer is at least 65 years old.'

Contract notes

Third-party PPAs appear permitted in MD (net metering allows third-party ownership; community solar program). Solar installs are home-improvement work, so the 5-day (7-day for 65+) home-improvement rescission window applies; MHIC licensing (Bus. Reg. §§ 8-101 et seq.) also applies to installers.

Enforcement watch: No Maryland AG consumer enforcement action against a residential solar installer 2024-2026 found. (AG Brown co-led multi-state Solar for All EPA suits 2025 — program-funding litigation, not consumer enforcement. PSC action against SmartEnergy 2025 was an energy-supplier case, not rooftop solar.)

What to do next in Maryland

  1. Check your deadline today. Maryland gives you: 3 business days generally — MD Commercial Law §§ 14-301–14-306 (Door-to-Door Sales Act); BUT home improvement contracts (incl. solar installs): 5 business days, and 7 business days if the buyer is at least 65 (Acts 2017, ch. 93 & 94, eff. June 1, 2017; § 14-301(d) definition); plus FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429 (3 business days, ≥$25 home sales).
  2. Send written notice before it expires. Certified mail, return receipt. Keep a copy of everything.
  3. Don't let them talk you out of it. "Wait and see" is how windows close. You can always re-sign later.
Get the notice written for you. The $39 SolarEscape Kit generates a cancellation letter citing MD Commercial Law §§ 14-301–14-306 (Door-to-Door Sales Act; home-improvement carve-out, Acts 2017 ch. 93/94), with your dates filled in — plus the complaint kit and bankrupt-installer playbook.
Not legal advice. This tool provides general information based on state statutes and the FTC Cooling-Off Rule as of October 2026. Laws change and every contract is different. For advice about your specific situation, talk to a consumer attorney or your state attorney general's office. We can't promise you can cancel — nobody can. What we do: tell you where the cancellation windows are, and what to do when they're closed.
